We owe thanks to the Chinese for more than Peking duck, the art of making paper, and the invention of gunpowder. We also are thankful for the traditional Chinese medicinal practice of acupuncture that dates back to roughly 200 BC. The concept and theory are deceptively simple – open the pathways, called meridians, in the body to achieve balanced flow. Acupuncture can be used to prevent illness and improve health, as well as treat a variety of conditions.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is relatively pain-free. Very thin needles are placed at specific points on the body to relieve tension and restore balance. A similar method is to use an electrical stimulation rather than needles. This method is called acupressure.
What Conditions is Acupuncture Used For?
Even though acupuncture has been around for over two thousand years, we are still finding more ways in which it is useful. Some of the most common uses today include reducing headaches and migraines, reducing or alleviating chronic pain, treating insomnia, improving cancer and chemotherapy recovery by enhancing immunity, preventing cognitive decline, and treating a number of pregnancy issues, such as postpartum depression, anxiety and even the pain of labour.
A number of insurance companies have begun covering alternative therapies, including acupuncture. At Innisfil Wellness Centre, we’ll directly bill your insurance for you.
